Sara hails from Fort Worth, Texas, where she began her formal training at a young age with Dance Concepts, Margo Dean’s School of Ballet, The Professional Youth Conservatory, and furthered her dance education at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Sara received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Modern Dance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA., where she had the privilege to work with established choreographers such as Gabriel Mason, Donald Lunsford, Molly Misgalla, Wayne St. David, Brian Sanders and Ronen Koresh. After completing her degree, Sara moved to New York City where she taught and performed with the Kennedy Dancers and Peyari Dance Project. Along with other Peyari emerging choreographers, Sara choreographed and performed her own work and was awarded Best Choreography from the Spotlight On Awards in 2002.
Sara has been teaching dance since 2001, in styles of jazz, modern, musical theatre, hip-hop, and contemporary dance. Sara has worked with more than a handful of studios in the DC metro area and beyond. She has choreographed musicals for summer art camps at Imagination Stage in Bethesda, MD, and Acting Manitou in Oakland, ME. Sara has performed professionally in the DC metro area with Dimensions of Funk and Groove Elements under the direction of Esperonto Bean, with performances at DancePlace, Mason-Rhynes Hip-Hop Festival, Earth Day at the National Mall and the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, to name a few. Sara has also performed with Rasa Arts Collective in Love Times Seven a Bollywood Musical, was one of six choreographers chosen to present her work in the 2011 Eureka Dance Festival at Dance Place, a performer with the talented cast of XXTheCabaret and was a company member of MoCo Dance Alliance under the direction of Alex Schools. Sara has performed as a flamenco dancer in the Spanish opera, La Vida Breve at the Gala Hispanic Theater with the In Series, and has also had the honor of performing with the In Series at the Embassies of Indonesia, Austria and Hungary. Sara has had the privilege of working with esteemed DC area choreographers and dance artists Jaime Coronado, Hayley Cutler (darlingdance), Tiffany Haughn (DancEthos), Erica Rebollar (Rebollar Dance), and Roxann Morgan Rowley.
You can catch Sara up next in Dance Place’s highly anticipated show What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Project, also as a performer in Goyescas and Goyesquitas, an In Series production and as one of two cast members in Imagination Stage’s new early childhood dance theatre show, Paper Dreams, in collaboration with Mons Dansa, a dance theatre company based in Barcelona, Spain.
Sara is the founder of Petworth Dance, a free outdoor dance series in NW DC, the Petworth Arts Collaborative, an umbrella organization focused on community engagement through the arts, a mom and wife to her beautiful little family and a proud triathlete who has so far completed five triathlons including an Ironman….she looks forward to her next race.
